Drama Team 2013

Congratulations to the Blue Devil Drama Team for their performance of Freak in the Conference 48 (formerly the Cumberland District) Theatre Competition.  The Blue Devils were crowned Conference Champions.  Eastside High School was named runner-up  with their performance of Cagebirds.  Both the Blue Devils and Spartans will represent Conference 48 in regional competition on November 16th at Galax High School.             Special congratulations to Haley Stanton for being named the Most Outstanding Actress in Conference 48, to Brittany Henry, Most Outstanding Supporting Actress, and to Trevor Gilbert, Most Outstanding Supporting Actor.  Jessee Rose and Leslie Murphy also received nominations.

Described by one judge as an episode of “dark whimsy,” Freak, by playwright Angela Hill, uses the metaphor of high school being like a circus side show.   "I've already been to high school, that's like the biggest freak show of all."  Freak’s protagonist, Monique, dreads school. The constant torment makes her feel like a sideshow freak. Every day, Monique wanders the scariest place on earth, the school hallway, and wishes she could just disappear - and then she does. Monique finds herself out of high school and in an "unusual, disturbing, and fantabulastic" sideshow. Monique the freak, the freakiest freak of all, wonders how she got there, why she is there, and what other outcasts lurk inside. Though sometimes dark, Freak emphasizes hope, and it is hope that finally leads her home.

The Blue Devils will present an encore presentation of Freak on Wednesday, November 13th at 6:00 PM at Castlewood High School.  The play is directed by theatre coach Pamela Roberson.  The community is cordially invited to attend this special performance and fundraiser.
